James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ,
To the twelve tribes scattered among the nations:
Greetings. — James 1:1
This was actually one of the first letters written by the apostles to spread the faith and to strengthen it among others. At this time the believers had been scattered around the Roman world after Stephen was martyred, and the letters written by the apostles were the mainstay in their support.
Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. — James 1:2
This can be referenced back to Matthew 5:11,12 when Jesus tells the disciples that they will reap rewards in heaven for the insults and persecution they endure here on earth. It is not to say that we should pretend to be happy when we’re not, but rather to be optimistic, and to know that the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel will come and will lift our burden.
Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. — James 1:3
The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines perseverance as this.
persevere – to persist in a state, enterprise, or undertaking in spite of counterinfluences, opposition, or discouragement
Despite what may come against us, we should stand firm and always move forward in our growth, without succumbing to any type of resistance. Christ tells us in Matthew 11:29-30 that with Him, we will find rest.

P.S. I will continue to go through the book of James as God reveals more to me.
