Hebrews 10:26-27

Hebrews 10:26-27 If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, but only a fearful expectation of judgement . . .

I must admit, I am not entirely sure what is being communicated in this passage. I believe scripture is clear that your salvation can not be lost. But this verse makes it quite clear that judgement will come, even to believers. Best case, there will be a cost in eternity as we stand before the judgement seat of Christ. Worst case, we make a mockery of what our Lord has done for us at the cross (and by our actions, denying Him). Which scenario are you willing to accept?

  1. I think it’s talking about your salvation being lost if you weren’t saved in the first place. Like you realise that this is truth, but you brush it off and go the way you were going anyway. That’s very scary. Also there is a thing about those who fall away after having once tasted of the heavenly gift… cannot be brought back to repentance. I think that is in Hebrews also, maybe the same chapter.

Thanks for this post. Those words “make a mockery of what our Lord has done for us..” is so powerful. We need prayers all around.

  2. You truly make me think…..if you get the chance check out “Have You Seen His Majesty” at My Alabaster Box just my thoughts poured out after reading this post………..thanks for edifying me today.

  3. This is a good reflecting point of interaction. Thanks for bringing it up Alex!

I think a good place to continue thinking about this is in Ephesians 4:30

“And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.”

key things I continue to ponder in this are two words “grieve” & “sealed.”

I agree with you both, Diana & Alex in eternal security. I do think in addition as you are thinking also that actions have consequences. There can be grace given but consequences can still come even through periods of grace. Like, a leader of the faith, falling in huge ways…..God will give grace & God will give consequences. But, so many hard hard consequences won’t disappear. A loss of trust means a season of building up trust.

I’m glad for your thinking friend!

  4. Interesting to debate between what constitutes ‘deliberate’ sinning and what doesn’t!!

  5. This was actually the writing of my friend (notice there’s no signature) and I’m still doing my own research on the subject, but I will leave my notes here when I’m done.

I seem to recall another reference to “deliberate sin” in either 1 or 2 Peter, but I’m having a hard time finding it.

  6. I am refreshed hearing you say that………”doing my own research”.

I get so energized by seeing believers search the scriptures.

  7. Isaiah 53:5 states the “he” (I believe this scripture is talking about Jesus) was wounded for our transgressions and bruised for our iniquities. I’ve heard folks say “sin is sin” but here we have two different words for sin one transgressions meaning you broke the law, missed the mark, fallen short we have All done that. Then the word iniquity which I believe is that deliberate, immoral, peverse, willful kind of sin….whether intentional as the last or unintentional as the first all sin has a penalty of death. Interestingly here in Isaiah 53:5 we see two different forms of punishment, “a wound for transgressions” a piercing wound is what is meant, an incision a cut that allows blood to flow freely….and the other a bruise indication a blow to the body but skin is not broken….the blood rushes to the surface of skin but never is released…..leaving a black mark…I was just thinking after pondering that isn’t that what deliberate sinning does….it just crushes the face of Christ once again…no amount of massaging a bruise makes it go away…in fact it makes it worse…yet we massage our own conscience with excuses, we try to hide the mark of sin behind our own justifications, and refuse to look into the face of Christ. If we would look at his face, like looking into a “pool of reflection” we would see the bruises he took for our willful sin….we must take the sword of Truth and open up our flesh and let the blood flow..without the “shedding of blood their is no remission of sin”….Luke 13:25-27 is the most sobering scripture to me…..people who ate and drank in his presence, heard his word….and Jesus said I don’t know you…Depart you workers of iniquity…Sobering….Search me O God, try me and see if their be any wicked way in me…that I might now circumcise my heart and crucify my flesh….Long comment again I know but forgive my rambling simply put today you made me think how their is a difference in stumbling in the dark and jumping off a cliff in broad daylight….the Light of His Word can keep me from stumbling IF I walk in it but if I deliberately continue to reject Him I will be possessed by none other than my self….running head long off that cliff like a suicidal pig..choosing to drop into the Abyss of Darkness.

  8. AHA I usually notice when the signature is missing, but I missed it this time. Good luck in your research! God bless you,
    Diana

  9. While the definition of what constitutes deliberate sin is important, what about the word sacrifice in verse 26.

If you follow the writer’s argument through all of chapter 10, I think it’s more likely that the sacrifice in verse 26 isn’t Christ’s sacrifice but the sacrifice of “bulls and goats,” the Jewish sacrificial system on the Day of Atonement.

  10. I guess I should explain more. I think that what the writer of Hebrews is saying in this chapter is that Christ’s sacrifice is good for all sins paid for once and for all. Our past and future sins are all forgiven due to Christ’s work on the cross, but if you want to go back to the old Jewish sacrificial system there is no sufficient sacrifice available, all that’s left is judgement.

  11. yeah, i have been pretty torn on this as well. i can relate to the fearful expectation of judgment. when you are aware of youre deliberate offense to the Lord it is very easy to fall into that adam and eve sin the garded mentality. to fear and hide. to be too ashamed and to scared to face the Lord. the rest still has me baffled. im still confused.

i would like to respond to the comment earlier about how great it is to hear about another brother or sister “doing there own research”. 2 Timothy 2:15 says:

Earnestly study to show yourself approved to God, a workman unashamed, rightly dividing the Word of Truth.

this is a command given and not a suggestion. our purpose on this earth is to seek to serve the Lord and grow in him through constant prayer without ceasing (1thessalonians 5:17) and diligent study of His word. seek him. dig into his word. there is nothing else of any importance on this earth or in our lives other than our relationship with the Lord and savior Jesus Christ.
